India’s Deadly ‘Ghatak’ Drone Promises Powerful Reach 1,000 km Away

India is developing a powerful new drone called ‘Ghatak’. This unmanned combat aircraft is designed to strike deep into enemy territory. It can reach targets up to 1,000 kilometers away. This makes enemies far from India vulnerable. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is building the Ghatak. It aims to counter China’s advanced fighter jets and drone technology. The Indian Air Force needs this advanced capability.

Ghatak Drone Capabilities

The Ghatak drone is built for deep strikes. It can attack enemy areas without risking a pilot’s life. The drone has excellent stealth features. This means it is hard for enemies to detect. It is also very powerful. This indigenous drone will be a key part of India’s future air defense. The drone uses a flying-wing design. This design has no traditional wings. It also hides its engine intakes. This greatly reduces its visibility to radar. This makes it very hard for enemy defense systems to find.

Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T)

The Ghatak drone is designed for ‘Manned-Unmanned Teaming’ (MUM-T). This means it can work closely with manned fighter jets. These include aircraft like the Su-30MKI and the upcoming Tejas Mk2. It can also work with the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This capability allows the drone to enter heavily defended airspace. It can destroy important radar sites and command centers. The drone’s design was tested with the SWiFT technology demonstrator. This stealth flying testbed flew successfully in 2022.

Ghatak Drone Size and Power

The Ghatak drone is about the same size as the Tejas light combat aircraft. However, it has better capabilities for long-range missions. It can weigh about 13 tons when fully loaded. It can carry around 3.7 tons of fuel. The drone will use a special version of India’s Kaveri jet engine. This engine will produce about 52 kN of thrust. The engine is currently being tested in Russia. These choices will give the drone a combat range of over 1,000 kilometers. It can stay in the air for up to eight hours. This allows it to attack targets far beyond the reach of normal fighter jets.

Ghatak Drone Armament

To stay hidden, the Ghatak drone will carry its weapons inside. It can carry up to 1.5 tons of munitions internally. While it can carry bombs for ground attacks, its main strength will be in air combat. It will work with the ‘Astra Mk3’ air-to-air missile. This missile is also called ‘Gandiv’. It uses a special propulsion system called ‘Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet’ (SFDR). This makes it a very advanced weapon.
