Akali Dal’s ‘Takri’ Symbol Faces Threat as EC Reviews Rival Claim
Akali Dal Symbol Under Scrutiny
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has accepted a petition from a faction claiming the Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) election symbol, the ‘Takri’ (scales). This move has intensified political activity.
Rival Faction Stakes Claim
The Akali Dal Resurfaced faction has formally asked the ECI to allot them the ‘Takri’ symbol. Their petition was filed by Advocate Gurjit Singh Talwandi.
Past Grievances Cited
Sources indicate the rival faction is using statements made by SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal on December 2, 2024, as evidence. Badal had reportedly acknowledged past government mistakes before Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The petitioners argue these mistakes caused widespread anger among party leaders, who wanted Badal to resign. His refusal to step down, they claim, led to the party’s split.
Symbol Allotment Process
Initially, the faction filed their petition under the Representation of the People Act. However, the ECI directed them to file under Section 15 of The Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. This section specifically deals with claims for election symbols. The commission accepted this revised petition last Monday.
