Shocking Wire Theft: Thieves Steal 1.2km of Power Line, Costing Rs 5 Lakh
In Shivgarh, Raebareli, thieves have caused significant disruption by stealing over a kilometer of electricity wire and damaging two poles. This brazen theft occurred just after the local electricity department completed repairs on a 19 km long old power line. The incident has resulted in an estimated loss of Rs 5 lakh.
The Stolen Power Line
For years, Shivgarh received its electricity from the Bachhrawan sub-station. In 2019, a new 220 KVA sub-station was established in Bedaru, serving the area. Following this, the power supply from Bachhrawan to Shivgarh was discontinued. The now-defunct line, stretching approximately 19 km, lay idle.
Costly Repairs and Testing
To ensure a backup power supply during the demanding summer months, the electricity department invested Rs 5 lakh to repair this old line. The aim was to have the option of drawing power from Bachhrawan if needed. The repair work was completed, and the line was scheduled for testing on Sunday.
Discovery of the Theft
During the testing phase, officials found that no electricity was flowing through the line. A subsequent investigation by departmental employees revealed the extent of the damage. The wires spanning from Ahladgarh to Ambedkar Nagar, measuring about 1200 meters, were missing. Furthermore, two poles supporting the line had been broken.
Financial Impact and Police Action
Departmental officials estimate the value of the stolen wire to be around Rs 3.75 lakh. Sub-divisional officer Sanjeev Kumar Sharma confirmed the significant loss. He stated, “Wires worth about three and three-quarter lakh rupees have been stolen.” A formal complaint has been filed at both the Shivgarh and Anti-Power Theft police stations.
The Station House Officer of the Anti-Power Theft station, Shashi Shekhar Yadav, confirmed that a case is being registered based on the complaint lodged by the SDO. The investigation into the theft is now underway.
